WILL Says City’s Second Attempt To Ban Conversion Therapy Still Unconstitutional

Save Your Rights Coalition of La Crosse announces that the Wisconsin Institute for Law & Liberty (WILL) today delivered a second warning letter to the City of La Crosse advising the city council not to approve a newly rewritten conversion therapy ban ordinance because it is still in violation of the United States Constitution.

The new ordinance “violates freedom of speech, freedom of religion, and parental rights; it is impermissibly vague; and it is preempted by state law,” stated the new letter from WILL.

The city’s Judiciary & Administration Committee meets in City Hall at 6 PM Tuesday, August 30, to reconsider the issue. The ordinance, as originally worded, was narrowly passed by the city council on June 9, but after reconsideration was referred for 60 days to rewrite it at the suggestion of the city attorney to avoid a lawsuit.

Coalition cofounder Shannon McKinney said the newly re-worded ordinance clearly still violates people’s Constitutional rights.

“These warning letters from WILL are alarm bells ringing for those city council members and the citizens of La Crosse,” said McKinney in a statement released today with the WILL letter.

“Citizens of La Crosse are waking up to what this city council is trying to do to them, namely, trying to take away your Constitutional rights.

“Save Your Rights Coalition is calling on concerned citizens to show up at the meeting in support of stopping the ban, and to protect and save your rights,” she said.
